Question about the mountain men of the 1800's?

i have four questions about the mountain men of the 1800's. first why did people become mountain men in the first place. second what was the process of making the clothes the mountain men wore ( buckskin, coonskin caps etc.) thirdly was it really possible for a mountain man to kill a bear with just a bowie knife and lastly what skills would i have to learn if i wanted to become a mountain man

Tall order, and this feels like a set up but here goes...
Why? Adventure, runnin from the law, tired of the laws ,Jedidiah smith told his men that the mountains aren't a mind set or a place to sin and drink, but just a place on the map!
Clothing, was made mostly from buckskins since there no clothing stores out there...
Possibility of killing a grizz with a large knife, yup! Hugh Glass did it , it did ruin his looks some, and Ben Lilly killed a few but shot them first to soften them up a bit..
What skills?...Hmmm? well, Be able to endure months of being alone, being good with an axe and rifle and a knife, be able to build a fire with only flint and steel or bow and drill if needed,be able to tan skins into usable material to make clothing, shoes, hats, and gear, be able to sew and cook. know how to put away food to keep through months of cold winter, be able to build a shelter that will keep ol' Ephraim out and the warmth in....be able to build traps for animals for food and such
know how to travel through and area using a compass by what was called dead reckoning...
Basically what ever the old ways of doin things with out having to go on Y/A and ask questions...
and last of all....you must posses the heart of an adventurer ! Keep yer nose in the wind, your eyes along the skyline..Take care a yer hair pilgrim!
