Although I agree with the answers given I will go ahead and give you my interpretation of the colors as I have learned over the years. I am going to try to remain specific to spellwork:

Blue Candle:

If it's dark blue, it can be used for protection spells. If it's light blue, it can be used for emotional healing and calming nerves and getting rid of anxiety. Blue can also be used to represent the water element on an altar.

Gold Candle - Can be used to represent the God aspect of Divinity on an altar and/or the Sun. Can also be used in prosperity spells or to draw strength from the masculine aspect of the Divine.

Green Candle - I have used green candles for prosperity spells (coupled with crushed basil) and it is very, very effective. Personally, this is the only way I have used them. It can be used to represent the Earth element on an altar. Personally, I prefer a brown candle for that but they aren't so easy to come by (unscented that is).

Orange Candle - Can be used to boost confidence, can be used in any kind of "cheer me up" spell...can also be used in spirit communication for attracting spirits. Also can be used for creativity.

Purple Candle - For psychic activity, astral travel, spirit communication and spiritual healing. Can also be used in physical healing spells as well. A light purple candle is more along the lines of the light blue candle, providing calm and comfort...relaxation.

Red Candle - The ultimate manifestation candle. Can be used to create passion and motivation in any given situation. You can place a red candle next to something you are supposed to study and the candle will draw you and compel you to focus and take interest in what you are studying. If you burn it by itself for no reason, you might find yourself totally drawn to it and playing with the wax and flame...I speak from experience on that one. It's a really good color for candle meditations. It can be used to boost spells or to remove obstacles. It represents the fire element on an altar.

Silver Candle - Can be used to represent the Goddess on an altar. It also connects to the Moon's energies. It is great for divination for that reason. As with the Gold candle, it can be used to draw strength from the Goddess.

White Candle - Can be used in place of any candle color. You can use it in prosperity spells, protection spells, healing spells etc. White is neutral in the way that clear crystal quartz is. It can be programmed to carry out a specific task. If allowed to burn on their own, they generate positivity, protection and clarity...actually, clear crystal quartz and white candles have the same definitions...never noticed that before.

Yellow Candle - This one I am weary of for personal reasons but I will tell you what I know that it can do. It attracts all things paranormal. IT can be used for spirit communication, you can call on your guides with it. You can use it to learn new things, it can be used for study. You can place a yellow candle in front of something you don't know much about (like maybe a stone or a symbol) and it will either signal your guides to educate you, or the spirit of the object itself will respond to you. It is a very powerful color (when speaking of candles).

I have never had good experiences with yellow candles but I think it is because my ancestors come from islands where I have been told that white magick and black magick is prominent there. I think that yellow is used in black magick there and I feel that when I burn yellow candles, even though they have plenty of positive uses, it taps into a dark place for me.

I want to add brown candles:

If you need to move, need a new job or are out of sorts and need to ground, use a brown candle and do a grounding spell. They are super effective. Brown candles will root you to the Earth and give you a very stabilized feeling. So if you are somewhere that you are unhappy and can't find a way out, a brown candle will work with Mother Earth and manifest a better destination for you.

Oh yeah and gray candles:

Gray IMO, is a very magickal color, it generates magickal energy. Just by burning it, your "witchy" side is stimulated.

That's all I can think of right now. I do think that our lineages have a great effect on what color will symbolize what. While I do agree that sometimes we develop opinions of colors over time, the opinion our higher self (our witchy self) has is way more accurate and is tapping into our ancestry....which is where our greatest power is. So tapping into that lineage...of all our lives combined, our soul's lineage, will align us with the correct color symbolizations for us individually.
