I'm building a guitar and want to put a locking nut on. How can I tell if I need a bottom or top mounting nut?
I have a general, strat style neck w/o anything special on it....
This is tougher than it sounds but I'll try to explain, assuming you have purchased a typical strat replacement neck.
A bottom mount means you drill through the neck and the nut is held on with bolts running through the neck and into the nut. A top mount means that it is held in place with 2 or 3 small screws through the nut and into the neck. The top mount is infinitely easier to install.
HOWEVER, either nut will require you to make a perfectly flat surface to mount it. This means that the little slot that exists must be expanded so that the extra part of the fingerboard (towards the headstock) is removed, and the entire surface there is leveled.
If it were me, I would reassess the need for a locking nut, and instead use a delrin, tusq, or graphite nut along with height corrected locking tuners (this means that each tuner is a different height depending on where it is on the headstock...Wilkinson makes them). We have actually updated our designs with this and find our customers are much happier.
