Oh, yes, penny rugs are still very popular among the primitive crafters! I want to let you know about a wonderful discussion forum for those who love the prim look--

They talk about anything primitive--painting, sewing, penny rugs, paper mache, you name it!

The basics about pennyrug making:

Get yourself some wool & wash it in hot water & dry in a hot dryer. Cut your circles for the pennys & some for a backing and attach each penny to each other with a blanket/buttonhole stitch & then Buttonhole/blanket stitch those to your backing. EASY!

A really easy and accurate way to do your circles and all the penny rug pieces is to draw them onto freezer paper. Draw them onto the dull side, cut them out--just roughly--iron the shiny side onto your wool or woolfelt, then cut the pieces out. The freezer paper templates can be used over and over again--so instead of cutting out 50 circles just do them in 10's or so and keep re-using them. It's really a time saver and makes for neater cutting.
