How do you make a very basic quilt?
I'm wanting to make a quilt out of all of my old shirts that I never wear (they're also shirts that donating them would be no good. Like, old sports ones and stuff that the Good Will would throw out.) Anyway! I'm not even really looking for a pattern. Just sewing together squares. How do I do so? Thanks!
Remove the seams and iron the fabric and then determine what is the largest block you can get from the (long) sleeves. Cut all the bocks the same length and width.
Arrange in a mixture that you like then determine how many block you want across and how many down.
Re-arrange if necessary as this is what the quilt top will look like when finished.
Start with the first row across and stitch together, using a 1/4" seam allowance. This is the standard, but if you want to use a wider seam, just keep them the same.
After you have the rows done. Press alternating the direction you press the seams. First row, to the right, second to the left and so on. This will help to keep the blocks aligned when you stitch the rows together.
Once you have all the rows together. Press again to smooth the top.
Measure and cut batting and backing to fit the top.
Lay the top, face up on a large flat surface. Next, place the top (face down) and then the batting.
Baste together with safety pins or with needle and thead (long stitches).
Sew up one side then the other. Next across the ends, leaving about 12" open. Trim the batting close to the stitching . Remove the pins or basting thread and turn the quilt inside out.
Press and close the opening. Hand stitch the opening closed.
Pin again down and across the middle. Top stitch down a few of the seamed blocks to hold the layers together and then 1/2" around the outside edges.
