Is collecting sea shell illegal?
Is it illegal to collect sea shells from beaches like huntington beach? its not like i'm going to take all of the sea shells from the beach, i'm just collecting the flat curvy shells not the one that has a creature inside. would i go to jail just picking up sea shells for my collection? i also clean them by soaking them in soap and i am not planning on selling them. so the thing that i am doing now wrong and illegal?
In some areas, collecting natural items is indeed illegal. You need to check with the local parks department (or whatever government agency oversees that particular beach) to see what, if anything, you can collect.
In my home city, we have a botanic garden, for instance, and even though it's a public place, people are not permitted to take any of the plants, or even dead plant material, from that garden.
If you are going to collect shells, I suggest soaking them in a bleach solution, as well as a soap solution. Quite frequently, there's dead organic material in or on the shells, and the bleach will prevent mold and mildew. It might also remove some or all of the color from the shell, so try using a bleach solution (about one spoonful of bleach to half a gallon of water should be plenty) on just ONE of each kind of shell.
If you are only collecting the empty shells, I don't think that you are doing anything really wrong, but it might be illegal in your area.
Your public library might have some books about the various types of shells on its shelves, and how to go about collecting, storing, and maintaining a collection. If it doesn't, ask a library worker about an interlibrary loan (ILL) for books on the subject. Personally, I am fascinated by sea shells and love the way they look.
