All kinds of counted thread work, including the all-time favorite cross stitch, are as popular today as they were in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when the lovely pieces featured in this book were made... |
I have some questions about cross stitch? What does this mean?
This is a Textile Heritage Collection kit. Sweet Violets Bookmark kit.
Here are the (some of the instructions) to start.
Find the right side of the fabric. (Right or left?) The indentations between the scallops are more raised on the right side. (What's a scallop?) The first stitch is worked over the third block from the right hand scallop edge and 4cm from the bottom of the fabric. (What does that mean?)
In this kit I also got a violet colored piece of felt. What am I suppose to use this for?
My mom hates doing cross stitch so I don't have any one at home to ask about it and I got this kit in a totally different state.
I will have a go at helping you.
The right side of the fabric means not the wrong side. My guess is that your fabric has a wavy edge on the two long sides - this is often used for bookmarks. The waves on the edge are called scallops. Lay your fabric flat with the scalloped edges to left and right. Measure 4cm from the bottom of the fabric and use a pin the mark the line of blocks at this level. Now on this line count three blocks from the right wavy edge and this is your starting block. This is where you make your first stitch. When you have finished working your cross stitch the back will look a little untidy (no matter how carefully you sew). I would guess that the piece of felt is to make a backing for your bookmark and leave it tidy.
