How does electrolysis work with 2graphite pencils, FeCl3 solution, 9v battery and alligator clips.?
what changes will happen to the set up. The cathode and anode will be the pencils.
The graphite pencils are the two electrodes. The FeCl3 solution is the electrolyte (it facilitates electron flow). The 9V battery provides the initial electron "push" to get the reactions started, suggesting that the reaction is not spontaneous / favorable.
One of the electrodes will be oxidized, most likely into CO2 gas. Since graphite/carbon has an oxidation state of 0, I don't see how the other electrode will be reduced.
